As of 18 April 2022, HALO investigators identified the impersonator website, pictured right. The site purports to represent the company “Gray Scale Invest,” described as “a privately-owned investment management company that was Established in 2013 by Digital Currency Group.” Halo assesses the scam uses the client’s name to support crypto payments and identity theft.

The site claims to offer fund distribution, investment advice, wealth management, and life insurance and directs users to verify their accounts by uploading a copy of a birth certificate, state-issued driver’s license, utility bill, or passport, likely to support identity theft. Additionally, analysts identified three cryptocurrency wallet addresses for client payment.

Analysts attempted to engage the scammers at the email support@graysinvestltd.co, but all emails bounced. No social media accounts were linked. Analysts also identified the phone number, right, associated with the site and determined it is serviced by Google Voice. Additionally, analysts noted “250 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10003,” listed on the website, is a large multi-tenant office building in Manhattan. (No suite/office number specified).
